Project Roles: Lead Designer, Level Builder, and Audio Engineer

The Eve Developer Video from Auston Montville, Creative Director and Lead Programmer of the project.

Your Journey Begins, Again

The Eve begins where an epic journey ends; at the castle gates of an infernal denizen who has taken something from you: Love. Your struggle appears to be over with the death of the monstrosity, but some inexplicable force whisks your companion far away from you, into a realm beyond reality. Determined to be reunited, you must begin the long and difficult trek of purification in order to reach the realms of the great beyond.

Progression

Throughout the experience, the player must attempt to come to terms with some of his inner demons including; vanity, lust, pride, and wrath if he wishes to be reunited with his love. With the completion of each level, the player is given the choice to relinquish a powerful ability, making the game more difficult and bringing himself one step closer to reaching purity and his love. However, the player may find that giving up what makes him unique is not worth the price, and he may instead decide to move towards the unknown horizon.

The Experience

There are four different endings to The Eve, all of which are designed in a meaningful way based on the actions of the player. The Eve takes advantage of games as a medium and allows every aspect of the experience to carry meaning for the player. Each element of the game may be interpreted, and allows a space for the player to ask and answer his or her own questions using the philosophy of dynamical meaning as defined by Jonathan Blow. As with any interpretive experience, there is no single correct interpretation, it was a goal of the development team to create an experience that could touch each player in a different way, and The Eve is such a game.

Project Development

The Eve was created by a team of four students over the course of four months with the project management assistance of Guillaume Langlois of Space and Dream. The game was implemented using a variety of tools including Multimedia Fusion 2 Developer, Adobe Photoshop, Autodesk Maya, Adobe Flash, FL Studio, Audacity, and SFXR.
