Artwork
In the autumn of 2007 I began learning 3D modeling at Champlain College. Provided with high quality instruction administered by Professor Joshua Buck, I greatly enjoyed digital art in three dimensions. I quickly picked up techniques and common practices of the trade as I continued to expand my knowledge base of Autodesk Maya 8.5, 2008, and 2009.
Below are some examples of my work from 2007 and 2008.
Still Life
The assignment was to model a real-life object. I chose to model a plush penguin toy I had sitting on my desktop.
Maya materials only.
Barrel and Crate
This assignment served as an introduction to UV un-wrapping and texturing simple objects. Playing World of Warcraft at the time, I decided to theme my containers around the content of the game.
One 512×512 diffuse texture for each object.
Triangle Count: Under 250
Real-Time-Strategy Building
An assignment to create a next-gen asset for an RTS computer game. I crafted the primary structure for a race of tree-dwelling humanoids.
Twelve 1024×1024 texture maps. Diffuse, normal, and specular texture maps for: ground, tree, solid structures, and transparent faces.
Triangle Count: 7962
Shortly after learning how to create basic models in Autodesk Maya, I began to animate. This greatly enhanced my modeling abilities, as I now understood exactly how a mesh deforms. My animations strive to bring something of myself to the table; whether it be through mannerisms or appearance, my characters can speak for me. I find animation a great deal of fun as well and greatly enjoyed my classes learning the art.
Below are two examples from my autumn 2008 class in 3D animation. The videos were compiled in Adobe After Effects CS4, and utilized Audacity and Adobe Photoshop CS4 for audio and static images respectively.
Licky
The assignment was to create a character with a strong center of mass and then create four simple animations: walk cycle, run cycle, creep cycle, and a jump. My character, Licky, was designed from a doodle in my sketchbook.
Rendered using mental ray.
Maya materials only.
Triangle Count: 4490
Data
My final project for the animation class. The assignment was to create a 15 second animation of a humanoid character who interacts with an object and achieves dynamic poses through his or her actions. My scene was inspired by the introduction for the Pixar film, Toy Story 2.
Rendered using mental ray.
Maya materials only.
Triangle Count: 6718
